This is a very useful website as it will help me with the music copyrights and the legal matters that must be thought about through the whole process of making my practical production. On this website, it has lots of links that has a lot of extra infromation on there which could be added and also websites which reference where they got the piece of information from. For example, it has a separate link to the World Intellectual Property Organisation which helps make the readwer understand what they need to know to understand the paragraph that is on there to explain a part of the copyright laws.
The website is split into different pieces. These pieces are What can be considered copyright material?, What is theft?, How do you know if your website content is being used without your permission?, What are the downfalls of having your content on too many sites?, What should you do when you find out when your content has been the victim of copyright infringement? and How can you prevent copyright infringement?. All of these headings are useful to everyone and not just the small demographic of people who know all the laws and copyright laws because it explains everything in a much easier way.
What can be considered copyright material?
"Copyright is a legal term describing rights given to creators for their literary and artistic works." this is a definition from the website about the world intellectual property organisation (reference - http://www.wipo.int/portal/index.html.en) There are also some other links on the paragraph which show what copyright is and what can be classified as copyright. (http://sbinfocanada.about.com/gi/o.htm?zi=1/XJ&zTi=1&sdn=sbinfocanada&cdn=money&tm=157&gps=403_399_1436_694&f=00&su=p284.12.336.ip_&tt=2&bt=1&bts=1&zu=http%3A//laws.justice.gc.ca/en/C-42/ and http://www.copyright.gov/) This will help me very much as the music I need to use in my teaser trailer must be copyright safe and therefore these websites will help me find out what is copyright and what isn't.
What is theft?
defintion of theft - "Noun: 1 a : the act of stealing; specifically: the felonious taking and removing of personal property with intent to deprive the rightful owner of it; b: an unlawful taking (as by embezzlement or burglary) of property." (reference - http://www.m-w.com/)
definition of infringement - "Noun: 1: the act of infringing: VIOLATION; 2: an encroachment or trespass on a right or privilege." (reference - http://www.m-w.com/)
This will help me very much as it will help me distinguish between what is theft and what is copyright. This will mean that whatever music I use in my teaser trailer is more safe and secure.
How do you know if your website content is being used without your permission?
This can only be known by word of mouth. So through friends who might go onto the website and then go onto another webiste and find the same thing. However, you could also search this into google by using quotation marks but the search that you are doing mustn't be too long. This will help broaden the search and therefore could be found easier to find the content.
What are the downfalls of having your content on too many sites?
Your reputation could be damaged as the person who sees the content on another website doesn't know that the content originated from your website. Also, Google search engine might view the content as spam and therefore not put it into the search.
What should you do when you find out when your content has been the victim of copyright infringement?
http://www.archive.org This website will show you who the founder of the website was on the website that you went on therefore making it easy to prove who produced the website. When someone finds out that they have used your webiste in a bad way, they will write an email apologising and explaining what they wanted to use the website for.
How can you prevent copyright infringement?
Unfortunately, there isn't really a way of preventing the copyright from happening but the laws should stop people from dping it because they are very costly to the persons reputaion and the fact that it is quite an expensive thing to recover from financially therefore persuading people not to do it.
