Poster research

As I have to make two ancilliary products and the first one was to make a magazine front cover, I am also going to make a poster for the film.

This movie poster, photographically, is very good. This is because it shows the two main characters of the film, which also makes the viewer aware of who is in the movie, and the colours that have been used help complement each other very well as the yellow in 'John' brings out the colour that is on the grass on the sand in the picture. Also, the picture that they have used for the poster isn't over exposed or under exposed. This makes the poster even better because it shows who the actors are very well without making them look 'un-human' and also the actors are good to take pictures of which helps when they need to take many pictures because if they weren't very good at taking pictures then they wouldn't make the movie poster very well which therefore would lead to poor cinema viewings which isn't what happened. I will most likely be using the way they have used colours to bring out the elements that are in the picture as I think it will make the overall look ofthe poster very effective.

This movie poster is very effective because it brings the world of Harry Potter to life almost. This is effective as it is like the proper wanted poster that they use in the film 'Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban'. This has been used because they want to make the viewers become apart of the film and to do this they need the viewers interaction with the posters that they create for the movie. This also shows the actor who is playing the prisoner in the movie who, at the beginning, we assume to be a bad guy. As the actor, Gary Oldman, usually plays psychotic characters or characters that are heroes and assist the main characters we know that he cannot be a bad guy. Therefore, it makes the viewer want to watch the movie even more because we want to know what kind of character he is going to play as we are confused by the fact that he is a bad guy at the beginning. Also, showing who is going to play Sirius Black makes the viewer want to go and see the movie because, if they have read the books, they want to know how he plays the role.

This poster shows no character and no proper scenery. This has been done because it shows a mockery of the proper posters that were used for The Dark Knight. It has all The Jokers scribblings on the poster because it shows us which characters are going to be used without actually giving a proper face. This is effective because it shows that The Joker is back and that he hates The Batman. The 'Why So Serious?' line at the top has been used on the poster to show why the poster has to be serious and is one of The Jokers main quotes. He is saying this because it could be that he doesn't want anyone to take The Batman seriously because he doesn't believe The Batman is a good guy. I could use this in my poster but not in this style as this could completely change the way in which the narrative is being put accross to my target market.

This poster is very effective photographically as well. This shows a picture of Kiera Knightley's face in the film titled 'The Duchess'. If the actress didn't photograph very well the poster would be a disaster as the whole poster focuses on the main character who, if you know what the film is about, is about Georgiana Duchess of Devonshire. The plain green background makes Kiera Knightley stand out as even more there is no off putting pattern behind her head which could make the viewer become disinterested in the movie and therefore the population of viewers for the movie has gone down drastically. The green background has been used because it attracts the target market more strongly and therefore captures their attention in an effective way. I will probably use this idea but I probably wont as my photography skills are not advanced and therefore the poster I would make wont be very effective.

Research into magazine covers

The ancillary products which I have decided to do is a film magazine front cover which features the film.

This movie poster shows the main character. This is so that the viewer can establish who is in the movie and therefore this could attract the audience to go and see the movie because it has Leonardo DiCaprio in the film titled 'Inception'. I would most likely use this effect as I would want to let people know who is in it as this could attract the target audience to see the movie. They have also used a very good effect which shows all the writing on a slant. This has been used as it has just sucked everything in from the magazine cover which could attract the viewer even more because it could also suck the viewer into watching the movie. The colours also contrast really well as you have the grey and the blue colours on the background and on the main character and then you have the red magazine name 'Empire' and the red title of the movie 'Inception' which shows up very boldly which is what the magazine wanted to do.

This poster has everything lined up in the middle of the poster which adds more emphasis on the title of the movie that it is promoting. Also, it shows the american flag which is related to the name of the movie, this has been done because it adds a more colourful background and it relates very well to the film in which 'Empire' is helping promote. It also shows the main character as one of the main focuses. This has been done because like in the other magazine cover, they want to establish the main character so that the viewer has some sort of familiarity with the film and so that they are 'up-to-date' with what is going on. All the colours that have been used on the front cover are the colours that are used on the american flag 'The Stars and Stripes' which shows that they have thought about what colours they should use to maximise effect.

This magazine poster is very effective. It has the name of the magazine in the authentic style in which 'The A-Team' uses its font in the movie as well as on the poster. Also, having different elements of the magazine poster similar to what is in the movie means that the viewer is likely to expect something similar to what the magazine cover is showing. Instead of showing one character, this shows 4 characters who all happen to be very significant to the storyline. This has been used so that the viewer can see who the casting directors have cast the main characters, B.A, Hannibal, Face and Murdoch. They have shown the characters of these people so that the viewers who were fans of the original series like who is in the movie and therefore will most likely be going to see the movie.

This picture on the front cover of the magazine has been used because it shows the main character and not much else. This has been used so that the viewer can establish the character and so that they can become more familiar with them. The colours that have been used are very similar to the colours that have been used for the picture of the character and therefore there aren't any bad colour contrasts that could make the magazine look very aesthetically displeasing. I will most likely use this sort of magazine cover but maybe have the whole of the person body along with another character that is one of the main focuses in my teaser trailer. The make-up used on the actress in the magazine cover makes the eyes look slightly wide and daunting. This has been used by the use of black eye-liner and the blue eyes. This has been used because it wants to tell the viewers about the character.

Finalised questionnaire!!!

As you can see from my last bolg post, we have had to design a new questionnaire because the other one was not made very well. Below you can see my proper questionnaire which I will be using for my practical to establish my target audience. In this blog post there is a link for my questionnaire, this will be sent out to people I know on facebook as they are the majority of my target market. To get opinions from an older target market as well, I will also be distributing the questionnaire to members of the general public so that I have a more reliable data. I will most likely get the general publics answers to my questionnaire on recording and then I shall be able to analyse the answers and put them onto my blog as part of my research.

Process of remaking the questionnaire...

So, after much thought went into our questionnaire we have been told to remake them as we didn't make the questionnaire to the best of our abilities. On this post, is a how to guide on how to make a questionnaire which I will put onto slideshare so I shall also put a link on here to go to my slideshare page for any other additional information that relates to my practical work.

20/9/2011 - market research

In today's lesson we looked at making questionnaires and primary research for our practical work. We made a mindmap of things that we needed to do and find out about our practical. After we made our mindmap we then thought of questions to put in out questionnaire so that I can have questions that I can analyse about my target market and what they like. I did my questionnaire on a word document but after I got advice from my teacher who pointed out that we could do it on google, I decided to do it on google. Below are the questions I have used:

I have decided that I will print this questionnaire out so that my target market who are 20 years and older will be able to be a part of my market research. I will also use facebook but as this will only give me a small sample of my market research as most of the people who I'm friends with are aged 17-18 therefore handing out this questionnaire to the general public and recording their answers on my phone (which has a recorder) and writing up what they have said. I realise that there are some ethical issues to deal with but this can be overcome by a consent form and telling them what will happen and what the information will be used for.

Research about teaser trailers!!

Definition of teaser trailer:

Teaser: An advertisement that gives a little information about a product in order to attract customers by making them curious to know more.
Trailer: An advertisement of a film consisting of extracts from it, shown on television or in a cinema.

Teaser trailers can last up to a minute and a half depending on where it is going to be exhibited. For example, if it's going to be exhibited in a cinema then it will have to be longer than it would be if it was exhibited on a website. The first example of a teaser trailer was by Richard Donner for the Superman movie. The film was about a year late and it was designed to re-interest the general public and inform them that a new movie was coming out. The teaser trailer for the Batman film, starring Michael Keaton in 1989, was an emergency marketing move that successfully convinced angered comic book fans that the new film would respect any original source material. Many of the teaser trailers seen are similar to TV spots but they appear in cinemas instead of on TV.

The youtube video above shows the teaser trailer for Inception. Christopher Nolan has decided to use little speech throughout the whole of this teaser trailer as it will create suspense a lot easier than it would if it used speech. However, there must be interesting shots which is what Christopher Nolan has used. Also, it uses shots from the film without giving the storyline away. This makes the viewer want to go and see the movie as they don't know what it's about but they can tell that the movie will be good from what they have seen.

This is a good example of a short teaser trailer. It teases the viewer by not showing them a great deal of the storyline but yet it still makes you want to go and see it in the cinema because of the shots that JJ Abrams has decided to use. I think that he has done it very successfully as it makes me want to go and see the film.

After reviewing two teaser trailers, I have decided that I will make my teaser trailer about a minute long as this will be distributed and exhibited in a cinema. So, it would be better if it was longer than 30 seconds because then the viewer will be able to see enough of the movie to want to go and see it.

More about post modernism (I could maybe use this in my practical!!)

In today's lesson we heard of 5 main modernist theorists and one of the theorists that we looked at today is called Ihab Hassan. This theorist is a university lecturer in America and has published many books and has researched a lot about modernism. Below is a table that shows the difference that he has made between modernism and post modernism:
Table showing the difference of modernism and postmodernism that Ihab Hassan established.

In a later post, I will talk about the other 4 theorists, but as we do not know what their names are I cannot possibly do this!!
In our lesson, we also had to represent the modernism and postmodernism with drawings that illustrated each one. For modernism, I drew a circle within a circle (this can be illustrated below)

I thought that this would represent modernism as it shows heirachy with the size of the circles, form because it is showing a circle and only a circle, design because it must have been designed by someone to draw circles within circles, centering because it shows the centre of the circle, boundary because the circle finally stops on the last circle and depth because of how many circles there are.

The picture below shows postmodernism and how I picture it in my head:

This shows postmodernism as it shows intertextuality, as the circles are overlapping each other and using each other to make everything chaotic, anitform because it is open and can carry on for ever and dispersal as it can go on forever and disperse easily.

I have written about modernism and postmodernism because I will use an aspect of this in my practical so that my theory can overlap with the teaser trailer that I will be producing for the end of the year.
