Focus group!!

My focus group will consist of 3 people. These people will be members of the target audience which I have decided to aim this teaser trailer at. This means that whatever I design, layout for my poster and magazine cover and the storyboard for my teaser trailer, will be seen by them first and then their opinion on how I can make it better will be provided in separate posts on my blog. I have decided to do this because I will get more information about the separate elements that I must deign and what I can do to make it better and it will tell me what my target audience are looking for exactly. Obviously, I have an idea of what my target market want as I have found these out from the questionnaire which I distributed on facebook. I will be recording their answers by recording them talking about my designs or by writing down what they think or both. I will keep you updated with what my focus group like/dislike about my teaser trailer, magazine cover and poster.

Editing techniques and different camera positions to use!!

As I will be using iMovie to edit my teaser trailer, the editing techniques which I will be using will be limited as I will only be able to use the different editing techniques which that programme offers me. The different editing techniques which I will, for definite, be using are fade in and fade outs. You may be thinking why I'm using this editing technique but it is because the genre of film that I have decided to use uses this quite a lot in their teaser trailers. They do this because it adds a form of suspense to it which could be very beneficial for me as this is what I want my teaser trailer to do to a degree. Another editing technique which I will use is merging two shots together. To do this, I will need to film two shots of what I need and then layer them on top of each other. I think this would be useful in my teaser trailer as, when I show a mirror scene of the female lead crying, I will also show the male lead who is supposed to be dead but to take him out of the shot I could either edit him out or layer two shots on top of each other. This will be used as when I looked at other teaser trailers and movie where they show the deceased loved one in a mirror, they layered two shots on top of each other and therefore this is what I will do.

The different camera positions that I will be using are panning, close ups, medium shots and reverse-shot-reverse. These will be used because they are appropriate for what I need to film and I think that they will be better to use than another camera position where it doesn't show what I want in the shot very well. A picture of the different camera positions are shown below:

This is a close up shot. I want to use this camera technique because I want the viewer to be able to feel the emtoion that the actors will be portraying. This is how it will be done and this is the sort of camera technique that I will be using.

This is a medium shot and I will be using this when I want to expose more of the character. I will be using this because emotion can not only be seen in the facial expressions, but also in the boyd language that the actors will be doing. This is a shot that I will be using more of.

This shot I will be using because I need to show a bit of conversation between the female lead and the female support. I need to do this because if I don't show what my teaser trailer is about, then I have lost my audience immediately because they won't feel motivated to go and watch the film.

Bloom's taxonomy (information to help is with our blogs!!)

This is a chart for the way in which we analyse and create our own work and how we analyse other peoples' work. Bloom came up with this chart and this is it!!

This shows what I need to think about when I analyse other peopoles' work. The bottom end f the scale, so the 'Remembering' and 'Understanding' is the bottom end of the grades for example E and D. The upper end of the scale so the 'Evaluating' and 'Creating' are the higher grades such as B and A. This is what I want to reach and therefore I should look at this everytime I am analysing my own work and people who I draw inspiration from.

SMART targets

Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, Timed...what SMART means. My smart targets are listed below and they will be all of the things that I must do which are the things above!!

Make a storyboard and record me talking about my storyboard.

This must be done by the end of next week!!

Cinematography!!

Wikipedia defines cinematography as "the making of lighting and camera choices when recording photographic images for cinema"

If my teaser trailer was to be exhibited in the world of cinema it would be distributed in an arthouse cinema because it is not going to be made on a major scale. This means that the imagery of the this would be much different to imagery from a blockbuster. To illustrate my point I will put down to images, one of a blockbuster and one of an individually produced movie and then comment on how they look different.

This is an example of an arthouse film and a shot which has been used from the film. This shows many of the main characters in the shot just looking at the camera. The background of this film is also suitable for when this film is supposed to be set in and therefore establishing the time period brilliantly. On another point, this means that when I make my teaser trailer it wont have many elemants in which my target audience will have to look at. This means that there isn't that much cinematagraphic images in there that woud make it approproiate to use on the cinema scale. This is the sort of thing that I will need to establish when making my teaser trailer because I would be exhibiting this film in an arthouse cinema because it attracts my target market and the images that I will use wont be suitable to use in a multiplex cinema.

This film is a blockbuster and the cinematography for this movie establishes all the main character by using close up of their faces. This is because the target market will associate with the actors better. This is a convention of these sorts of movies because showing close up of the actors' faces means that we can judge whether the movie is any good because of who is in the shot. Also, Inceptio is a very good example of using great cinematography. This is because when the action sequences show up on the multiplex cinema, everyone is mesmerized in the cinema because there is so much in the shot that if you were to watch it on a small screen, the viewers would miss certain elements which make the shot amazing.

Marking criteria for everything!!

Marking Criteria

Soundtrack...and what music I can use!!

The soundtrack for this movie will be small as it is only going to be a 30 second teaser trailer. However, I still want music in my teaser trailer so that it is more smooth and that it will attract my target market.

The music which I have decided to use will be guitar music because the target market which I have got enjoy playing, or listening to, acoustic guitar music. I know this because of other pieces of research I have found on the internet. I will also use acoustic guitar music as I can make the music myself by writing music on my guitar. This will not be used from anywhere else and therefore will be copyright free. This is a major advantage because I don't have to write any emails asking whether I can use somebody else's music in my teaser trailer. However, this can be seen as a disadvantage because I will need recording equipment and a studio to do this which is very time consuming and therefore will be difficult to complete in the time that we have to spend on our practical production.

If I do need to use any other pieces of music in my teaser trailer which I cannot make on my guitar, I will have to look back on the post I made about copyright music and read what the laws are about using somebody else's music in my work. I will most likely have to email the company/individual about using their music in my teaser trailer and the evidence the email that I will receive from them explaining that I can use their music in my practical production. This is an advantage because I don't have to make much music on my guitar and the have the time to use specialised recording equipment and then a studio to do this in. However, this can be a major disadvantage because it will be time consuming waiting for a reply from the person I need to borrow the music from.

Casting for my production

The cast which I have decided to use will be actors who are of the target audience age so that my target audience can relate to them on a better level. I thought of doing this because not only can my target audience relate to the actors on a better level, but I can also find who I want to act in my teaser trailer a lot easier as I don't know any other people who are older than 25 to act in my practical production.

I have decided to use Amy Patterson as the female lead who is saddened by the loss of the dead boyfriend. I have picked Amy to act as the female lead because she is 17 and therefore will address the target audience in a better way because she is about the same age, she has a history of drama and therefore I know that she will be good at acting and, if I need to, I can make her look older by adding make up to establish this. I think my target audience will be able to relate to Amy in a positive way because she matches the conventions of the character which I need her to be. I could test this out before by doing casting sessions and finding out what she can do before I straight away get her to act in my teaser trailer for me. In conclusion, I will most likely be using Amy to act this role because I know that my target market will enjoy her acting.

For the 'medium' character I will be using Jenni Dack. I have decided this because she is older than Amy and therefore she will be better suited for this character. Also, she has studied drama in the past and therefore will be reliable in terms of acting. I think that my target audience will like her as this character because she is a good actress and is of similar age to my target audience and therefore will be able to relate to my target audience on a more personal level. Also, I can me Jenni look older by adding more make up and using costumes which will make her look older. Before I completely cast Jenni as this character, I will do some acting sessions with the other actors so that I can see what all of my actors are like together. In conclusion, I will most likely be using Jenni as this character because I know that she can act well and she will match the conventions of this character very well.

For my male lead I am still deciding between two people. The male actors who I am deciding on whether to use for acting are Kieran Corder and Joe Cracknell. They are both roughly the same age as my target market and therefore will be able to interact with the target market on a better level. Thinking more into it, I will most likely use Joe as my male lead because he has a history of drama and I have seen him inn a drama performance and I know that he can act well. Also, he will be more reliable when I need him for filming. I think my target audience will like Joe as the male lead because he can act and he has a lot of chemistry with the female lead, Amy. If I don't establish the chemistry between the male and female lead my target market will not like the teaser trailer because they will find it awkward between the two actors. This will be good for me because it means I have addressed my target market a lot better and made it more emotional.

Mise-en-scene (everything else that needs to be considered when filming!!)

This post will be about everything that I need to use in my shots. This will include costumes, props, any extras that I might need to make it look more realistic and anything that is relevant to what I need to film.

Costumes will be from the modern age because I don't need anything that is from the past times because that is not the time period in which I need to film in. This will help me immensely as this means I wont have to provide any old costumes which could be costly and make the whole of my practical production more difficult to produce. Also, this means that my actors can use their own clothes and therefore feel slightly more comfortable when filming as they wont have to wear clothes which I give them which could be uncomfortable. This will also cut down the problem of the clothes not being the actors' size because if this happened filming would have to be postponed but I do not need to worry about that as they will be using their own clothes.

The props in which I will be using during the process of my practical production will be mugs, books and certain memorable objects that reminds the female lead character of the male character who has died. This will help make the whole teaser trailer look more realistic and therefore it will be what I want it to be, which is realistic. All of the props that I have mentioned above are props that I already have which will help me immensely in my practical production as this means that I wont have to buy any other specialised props which could prove to be very expensive and time consuming. Having the props already will also cut down the amount of problems I may encounter because it means that I wont be relying on other sources to get the props in time.

I could also use some extra people in the background to give it more of the realistic look that I want to capture. This will mean getting consent from members of the public and asking whether they want to be an extra in the teaser trailer. However, to overcome this problem because unfortunately I don't have that much filming time, I could use members of my family and therefore I won't need so much consent as they will be people that I know, and because of this, I will be able to communicate with them a lot better.

As I'm filming, I will improvise with what props to use because this means that when I look at the shot I can make the shot better, aesthetically speaking, and will make it look more finished.

Location for my teaser trailer

For my practical production, I have been looking at several different locations. These locations will be similar to the ones that I will have seen in the similar teaser trailers in which I have looked at as this will mean that I am following the conventions of that type of film more closely.

My first location I have thought about using is a bedroom scene. This will most likely be my own bedroom as this room matches the target market in which I am basing this teaser trailer at. Also, it will be easier to use my room as I know for definite that I can use this location without difficulty and the actors which I have chosen to act in my 30 second teaser trailer will be able to get there without any complications. The only problem with using this as a location is that my room is not very big. However, I could possibly use another room in my house which could be used as a bedroom and therefore I will have more room to put equipment to move around more freely.

This shows my bed where some filming of the female lead character will be shown crying on the bed because of the loss of her boyfriend. I will be taking down the images on the wall during the filming process.

This is a picture of my room from one angle. This shows the contents of what my room looks like, however, you can see what is on the walls. When I film, I will be taking what is on my walls down so it gives the more clean and more aesthetically pleasing look.

The second location which I have thought about using is a cliff side scene as I will need this for when the female character has a flashback of what her and the male character, who happens to be her boyfriend, used to do. I have decided to use this location as this will set the mood for what I need to accomplish and also it will have better photographic opportunities for when I photograph my poster and the magazine cover. However, the only problem with using this is that it can get very windy and therefore the sound might sound distorted which will lead to poor quality filming which is not what I want. To overcome this problem, I will do some sound testing first and then film elements of my teaser trailer there so that I don't have any problems when I am finally filming my practical production.

My final location which I could possibly use is a beach scene. This will be the alternative to my second location just in case the sound doesn't come out well or isn't the sound which I want. The beach could have multiple problems but I'm to overcome these problems I am going to find out what time of the day I can go out and film there without the tide coming into the bit in which I want to film at. Also, I will do some sound testing to make sure that the sound isn't distorted and that it doesn't sound bad.

Draft of magazine cover

This is the draft of my magazine cover. This is the sort of picture that I would like in my finished magazine cover as you can see the actors faces well and the composition fits nicely. Also. where the writing is, it makes the reader look at the whole magazine instead of small elements of the magazine. The fonts that I have used are all different and I have specified that I will be using different colours to make the cover look more eye catching.

Drafting the script and the storyboard!!

The only part of the script which I have redrafted is the fact that I have added black screens to add more tension and changed where I put the rhetorical question. I will get feedback on this when I have fully completed my teaser trailer.

The storyboard which I have redrafted is illustrated below:

This is a rough drawing of what my teaser trailer looks like. This uses 12 slides instead of 8 as there were more elements to it that I thought would make the teaser trailer better. On these images, I have also written down what camera position I will be doing unless it's not obvious. There aren't many camera techniques which I have decided to use because in movies that are similar to the teaser trailer that I'm doing, normally they haven't got very many camera positions because they don't want to make the film look to exaggerated. This is the main reason why I have not made many camera positions. I didn't want the film to look to empowering and if there were many different shots it would have changed the genre which I wanted.
